PERFECT SCORES AS SALT LAKE SEMI-FINAL SIZZLES

Strong French and Japanese performances set up fascinating final

The women’s Boulder semi-final continued where the qualification left off with more perfect scores on the cards.

France’s Zélia Avezou and Japan’s Nakamura Mao both flashed all four boulders for 100 semi-final points and lead the eight women still left with a shot of a World Cup Salt Lake City medal.

On countback to the qualification, it is Avezou who will be the last climber out in the evening’s finale, but she knows a previous round stellar performance doesn’t always translate to success: “I feel I am climbing well, but semi-final climbing and final climbing is so different. I need to just continue to be confident in my climbing into the next round and hopefully I can get a medal.”

For Nakamura, previous heartbreak is fuelling her push for a podium: “Getting 100pts is so cool, it’s so exciting for me. But now it’s the final and I really want to win a medal. I’ve been fourth three times; I want a medal his time.”

Talking specifically about the semi-final, Nakamura knew it could have been high scores all-round: “It was so amazing, my climbing was so good. I thought it was a round that could have been done by everyone, it was more about who could do it within the five minutes.”

Two climbers who did top all four Boulder were USA’s Annie Sanders and France’s Naïlé Meignan. Both have won a gold medal each in the two 2025 Boulder World Cup’s to date. Sanders scored 99.7pts and Meignan scored 99.6pts.

Japan’s Ito Futaba was in tears after the Curitiba final missing out on a medal, but into yet another final in fifth, she will be hoping for a podium performance and tears of joy in Salt Lake City.

With Ito in fifth with 84.9pts, Australia’s Oceania Mackenzie is just behind on countback in sixth with the same score.

Looking to overcome her disappointment of a silver medal in Curitiba when she knew she could have won gold, France’s Oriane Bertone goes into the final in seventh with 84.7pts, but also with a perfect score in qualification to boost the confidence.

The final place goes to Japan’s Nonaka Miho who made it into finals at the expense of USA’s Helen Gillett. Both scored 84.6pts but Nonaka’s superior qualification score gave her the advantage.

Nonaka did what she needed to do on the final Boulder, topping in four attempts to push Gillett out of the eight. Gillett herself also had a little drama when she had to reclimb Boulder three after an appeal on her top. She did top again on her reclimb.

The medals will be awarded as the women’s Boulder final will take place at 17:00 (UTC-6:00) local time in the USA Training Center venue.
