TOP SCORES AND TIGHT MARGINS MARK BOULDER QUALIFICATIONS IN CURITIBA

French and Japanese climbers dominate the opening round of the IFSC Climbing World Cup Curitiba 2025.

The Boulder qualification rounds at the IFSC Climbing World Cup Curitiba 2025 took place today, 16 May 2025, with athletes completing five problems under the new point-based scoring system. A total of 24 men and 24 women advanced to the semi-finals based on their score in this opening round.

ANRAKU TOPS MEN’S FIELD

Anraku Sorato of Japan led the men’s Boulder qualification round with a near-perfect score of 124.5 points, becoming the only climber to top all five problems. Teammate Sugimoto Rei followed in second place with 108.7 points, missing a top on boulder number two. Third place was shared by Paul Jenft of France and Amagasa Sohta of Japan, both earning 99.5 points after failing to score on problem number two.

Jan-Luca Posch of Austria placed 15th with 83.3 points and secured a spot in the semi-final.

"I climbed well and calm, that’s the most important thing, I did what I had to do and I’m quite happy with the result," said Posch.

“Being here in South America is really cool. Crowd here is really loud, so it’s fun.

“I was 17th in Keqiao, it was okay, but not the result that I hoped for. My goal is to be in the top-10 or even make it to the final, so I hope that I can improve here. I just made some small adjustments, like concentration on the wall and not doing too many mistakes, but nothing too big.”

BERTONE LEADS FRENCH SWEEP

France took control in the women’s field, with Oriane Bertone leading the round thanks to a 124.8-point score, built on four tops, all flashed. Zélia Avezou followed closely in second place with 124.7 points, also earning four tops—three of them on her first try. In a three-way tie for third at 109.8 points were Agathe Calliet, Camilla Moroni of Italy, and Nakamura Mao of Japan. All three climbers failed to top the fifth and final boulder.

Camilla Moroni of Italy shared her thoughts after securing her spot in the next round.

“Qualification was good, maybe not the hardest round, but I felt good. I’m happy with my performance. I was a bit nervous because China was hard for me as I didn’t feel so good. So this one felt like the first comp of the season for me.

“Being here in Brazil is a good experience. It’s a new new country unlocked. And I really like the Climbing community here, it’s very excited, so I think it will be good for a semis and finals,” she said.
