CLIMBING IN FOCUS AS COMMISSIONS MEET IN TORINO

New members joined for the first in-person meetings on the new four year mandates

The IFSC Commissions Week returned to the home city of the Federation’s headquarters in Torino, Italy, for four days of strategic discussions, planning, and collaborative dialogue, bringing together representatives from across the global climbing community.

From 2 to 5 December, members of nine IFSC Commissions gathered both in person and online to review the past season, identify areas for improvement, and outline priorities for the future. The annual meetings play a vital role in the IFSC calendar, providing the foundation for the sport’s technical, operational, and athlete-focused evolution.

The newly appointed Chair of the Athletes’ Commission, Kyra Condie of the USA, led her first in-person meeting alongside her fellow representatives, contributing athlete perspectives to the wider Commission discussions before joining the respective subject area groups. Their involvement reinforced the commitment to keeping decision making closely aligned with the lived experience of elite climbers.

Over the course of the week, the Coaches’, Events, Governance, Media and Marketing, Medical and Anti-Doping, Risk and Finance, Routesetters, and Rules Commissions each met to address topics central to the sport’s future. Discussions ranged from routesetting innovations and competition operations to safeguarding, anti-doping frameworks, and media strategy.

This was the first in-person meetings held with the new commission members following the end of the previous terms at the 2025 General Assembly in Larnaca, Cyprus. Each Commission is now composed of representatives nominated by their National Federations, broadening the range of expertise for the new four-year mandate.

Reflecting on the week, IFSC President Marco Scolaris highlighted the essential role the Commissions play in shaping the sport’s trajectory:

“Our Commissions are the engine moving our sport forward. Every aspect of the organisation is talked about, debated and considered by the people that are rooted in the heart of climbing. It was the first time for some of the new members to get together in Torino, and - like us within the IFSC and looking at their expressions every night at dinner - they found the meetings very valuable, and I thank them for their important contributions.”

As Commissions Week concluded, representatives from the IFSC World Cup and Youth World Championships organising committees participated in a workshop and held meetings with IFSC staff, aimed at sharing best practices and strengthening coordination ahead of the upcoming season.
