FIORIO, BOULOS TAKE EUROPEAN SPEED GOLDS AT HOME

Both Italian athletes have raced below their official Personal Bests to secure their wins.

Just a few hours after the closing of the IFSC Youth European Cup, the beautiful Parco Della Brida in Mezzolombardo, Italy, hosted the first European Cup in Speed on Saturday, 7 June, welcoming 60 athletes from 10 European nations.

TEAM ITALY TAKE TWO GOLDS

Italy’s Agnese Fiorio and Alessandro Boulos took the two gold medals at stake, with Fiorio beating fellow Italian climber Beatrice Colli in the gold medal race, and Boulos prevailing over France’ Guillaume Moro.

Both Fiorio and Boulous ran below their official Personal Bests in the final rounds: the 19-year-old from Arco – whose official PB stands at 7.33 seconds – won her semi-final with 7.25. In the men’s race for gold, 30-year-old Boulos stopped the clock at 5.22 – 0.04 seconds faster than his fastest homologated time.

With Colli taking silver, the women’s Speed podium was completed by France’s Capucine Viglione, who ran two sub-7s in the round and beat Spain’s Carla Martínez Vidal in the bronze medal race.

Another Spanish climber – Miguel Gómez Barrios – placed third and won bronze in the men’s event. In the race for third place, Barrios won against first-time participant Gilles Meili of Switzerland.
