SANTIAGO 2023 OPENING CEREMONY SET THE STAGE FOR SPORT CLIMBING’S PAN AMERICAN GAMES DEBUT

A flashy, spectacular opening ceremony, held at the National Stadium in Santiago, Chile, officially kicked off the 19th edition of the Pan American Games – taking place in the Chilean capital city from 20 October to 5 November.

Four months after making its debut at the European Games , and a few weeks after appearing for the second time in the sports programme of the Asian Games , Sport Climbing is also about to make its first appearance at the third regional, multi-sport event in 2023. Across four days of competitions, medals will be up for grabs in four events: women’s and men’s Boulder & Lead, and women’s and men’s Speed.

Furthermore, each event will also award an Olympic quota place for Paris 2024, making Santiago 2023 the third event after Bern 2023 and Rome 2023 to award a set of Olympic tickets.

“We are honoured to be in Santiago, and to have Climbing included in such a historic event!” said IFSC President Marco Scolaris, who represented the IFSC at the opening ceremony along with Secretary General Debra Gawrych.

“We have been working for inclusion in the programme since 2006, and now we are finally here. It's our third regional, multi-sport event this year, and to have it paired with the qualification to the Olympic Games adds a layer of great value to it. Pan American climbers will be the best ambassadors of our sport for the fans at the venue, and on live television.”

Climbers will start competing on Saturday, 21 October, in the men’s Boulder & Lead semi-final round – kicking off at 10:00 (UTC-3:00), – the women’s Speed qualification and final will follow, starting at 19:00.

The full schedule is available on the event page of Santiago 2023. All competitions at the Pan American Games Santiago 2023 will be streaming on the Panam Sports channels

Updates and news about the Climbing competitions will be available on the official website of the event, on the IFSC website , and on the Federation digital channels: Facebook , Instagram , X , LinkedIn , and exclusively for the Chinese audience, Douyin and Weibo
