MEN’S BOULDER & LEAD SEMI-FINAL SET IN LAVAL IS LED BY ADAM ONDRA

A packed climbing hall at Espace Mayenne in Laval, France, hosted the men’s Boulder & Lead qualification of the IFSC European Qualifier, selecting the top 20 athletes advancing to semi-final.

At the end of two consistent phases, 30-year-old Adam Ondra of the Czech Republic finished at the top of the overall ranking, having placed first in Boulder and sixth in Lead. Ondra, a 22-time World Cup gold medallist, finished with 155.4 points.

Young talents Toby Roberts of Great Britain and Paul Jenft of France followed in second and third position, only being separated by 0.8 points – 148.3 for Roberts, 147.5 for Jenft.

Tokyo 2020 Olympic champion Alberto Ginés López of Spain also signed a strong performance, recording the highest number of points in the Lead phase – 92.1 – and adding a one-top performance on the Boulder wall. The 21-year-old Spanish climber totalised 136.9 points and placed fourth.

Along with Jenft, the home team moved three more climbers in the semi-final round: Sam Avezou, seventh with 125.0 points; Mejdi Schalck, eighth with 113.1; and Mickael Mawem, 13th with 97.4.

Day three at the IFSC European Qualifier Laval 2023 will feature both semi-finals: the women’s Boulder phase will begin at 9:00 (UTC+2:00), while the men’s one is scheduled to start at 14:00. Both genders will then take on the Lead wall starting at 19:00. Tomorrow’s competitions will be live streamed on the IFSC YouTube channel
