GINÉS LÓPEZ, GARNBRET LEAD THE WAY IN LEAD QUALIFICATIONS

Top-ranked athletes delivered strong performances as the Lead competition began in Innsbruck with joint qualification rounds.

The IFSC Climbing World Cup Innsbruck 2025 continued today with men's and women's Lead qualifications, as athletes climbed two routes each on the inconic wall of the Kletterzentrum.

JAPAN STACKS THE MEN’S TOP SIX, BUT GINÉS LÓPEZ TAKES THE LEAD

Spain’s Alberto Ginés López topped the men’s leaderboard after two impressive climbs, scoring 38+ on route one and 45+ on route two. The Tokyo 2020 Olympic champion held off a strong Japanese contingent that claimed four of the next five spots.

Suzuki Neo of Japan – silver medallist at this year's first Lead World Cup competition in Wujiang, China – took second. Suzuki was the only climber to top one of the men’s routes — route one — while Anraku Sorato, fresh from securing his third consecutive men’s Boulder Series title, placed third. Yoshida Satone – the winner of the second Lead World Cup competition in Bali, Indonesia – placed fourth, Murashita Zento rounded out the Japanese group in sixth place.

France’s Max Bertone placed 15th and advanced to his eighth Lead semi-final in eight World Cup appearances in the discipline.

“Qualification was very good, I felt very well on the routes, I think I'm starting to find my flow,” Bertone said. "I still don't think I gave my best, I always fall because of some wrong beta or wrong expectations on how the holds will be.

"I'm still looking for my perfect climb, but it's getting better. I'm just a bit sad that my semi-final will be just before the cleaning.

"I'm training a lot on on-sight routes, where I can manage to find different techniques on competition routes, but we all know that competition routes are way different than training ones, so you never know what holds will be on the wall, you try to find some references, but I don't think it will ever be possible to know every hold on a single route.

GARNBRET DOMINANT AGAIN, SIX-WAY TIE FOR SECOND PLACE

Just a few hours day after clinching gold in women’s Boulder, Slovenia’s Janja Garnbret was untouchable once more, topping both qualification routes to lead the women’s field with authority.

Behind her, six athletes tied for second place with 40+ on route one and 44+ on route two. Among them was Garnbret's teammate Lucka Rakovec, making her World Cup return after a long break since Wujiang 2023.

“It's amazing," she said. "It's been a long time since I've been competing, it's special, but I was extremely nervous! I don't think I have ever been this nervous before a competition. I'm not good anymore at dealing with stress. After the first route I felt way better, I guess I just needed to break the ice.

"The competition circuit hasn't changed. I missed the people, I missed the experience, the atmosphere, everything."

Also in the second-place tie were Erin McNeice of Great Britain, Laura Rogora of Italy, Tanii Natsuki of Japan, Seo Chaehyun of South Korea, and Annie Sanders of the USA.
