HIGHAMS’ HIGHLIGHTS: IFSC WORLD CUP SALT LAKE CITY 2023

Throughout the 2023 season, the IFSC will bring some interesting facts and figures ahead of our events, in association with statistician Paul Highams. The next set of stats is for the upcoming World Cup event taking place at Pioneer Park in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA, from 19 to 21 May 2023.

HIGHLIGHTS

The IFSC World Cup Salt Lake City 2023 will be the 386th World Cup event in the history of IFSC – the 21st taking place in the USA. The event will feature the 145th men’s and women’s Boulder competitions, and the 131st men’s and women’s Speed competitions.

NUMBERS

In total, 251 athletes are registered to compete:

  • 70 in men’s Boulder;
  • 66 in women’s Boulder;
  • 67 in men’s Speed;
  • 49 in women’s Speed.

ATHLETES’ STATS

Male competitors:

  • Jernej Kruder (SLO) will start in his 84th Boulder World Cup competition, an all-time male record for the discipline;
  • Sean McColl (CAN) is the most experienced athlete in the start list, as his first World Cup participation was in Aprica, Italy, in 2003 – he will also start in his 70th Boulder World Cup competition, fourth on the all-time list;
  • Eleven of the men competing in Boulder have won a World Cup event before;
  • Nine of the men competing in Speed have won a World Cup event before.

Female competitors:

  • Fanny Gibert (FRA) will start in her 50th Boulder World Cup competition, tying the French record of Melissa Le Neve and Melanie Sandoz;
  • Kim Jain (KOR) is the most experienced athlete in the female start list, as her first World Cup participation was in Chamonix, France, in 2004;
  • Four of the women competing in Boulder have won a World Cup event before – Natalia Grossman (USA), Kim Jain, Nonaka Miho (JPN), and Brooke Raboutou (USA);
  • Three of the women competing in Speed have won a World Cup event before;
  • Only 18 of the 49 women competing have participated in a Speed World Cup competition before 2022.
