GARNBRET, GROSSMAN, AND ONDRA TOP LEAD SEMI-FINALS IN CHAMONIX

The eighth instalment of the International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) World Cup Series 2022 continued this morning in Chamonix, France. Slovenian Olympian Janja Garnbret and the USA’s Natalia Grossman placed joint first in the women’s Lead semi-final, while Czech Olympian Adam Ondra topped the scoreboard in the men’s.

Garnbret and Grossman topped this morning’s route and thus, will progress into the women’s final this evening in joint first position. The pair each achieved two tops in the qualification round yesterday and as such, a further top in the semi-final puts them side-by-side heading into the final. Also securing the top hold this morning were Tanii Natsuki, of Japan, and Italian Olympian Laura Rogora, who move into the final in third and fourth place, respectively.

Olympian and reigning Lead World Champion – Seo Chaehyun, of South Korea – also earned a place in the final, in joint fifth alongside American Olympian Brooke Raboutou. Although reaching the top hold of the semi-final route, Raboutou was awarded a score of 37 due to timing out.

Completing the line-up for the women’s Lead final are Olympians Jessica Pilz, of Austria, and Mia Krampl, of Slovenia, who placed a respective seventh and eighth in the semi-final.

With a score of 40+, Sam Avezou was the only French athlete to achieve a place in the Lead final on home soil this weekend, concluding the semi-final in fifth position. In joint sixth place with 36+, Great Britain’s Hamish McArthur, Germany’s Yannick Flohé, Japan’s Homma Taisei, and Switzerland’s Sascha Lehmann earned the remaining spots in the final. The four athletes tied in the qualification round, resulting in a further tie following the semi-final.
