A bright, warm sun welcomed the 123 athletes that competed in the men’s and women’s Lead qualification rounds in Villars, Switzerland, where the fifth stage of the 2021 IFSC World Cup Series is currently underway.

Coming from four consecutive wins in Villars-sur-Ollon – obtained between 2016 and 2019 – Slovenia’s Janja Garnbret easily climbed the two qualification routes, finishing with two tops and securing first place.

Japanese athlete Abe Momoko – who just made her World Cup debut in Innsbruck, Austria, where she placed 13th – followed in second position, while Garnbret’s teammates Lucka Rakovec and Mia Krampl respectively finished third and fifth.

Natalia Grossman of the United States of America – who won four Boulder World Cup medals in 2021 – placed fourth.

In the men’s Lead event, experienced Italian climber Stefano Ghisolfi confirmed his great shape by finishing with 43+ on route number 1, and a top on route number 2. Olympian Alexander Megos of Germany followed in close second, while home favourite – and 2019 Lead gold medalist in Villars – Sascha Lehmann took third place. Both Ghisolfi and Lehmann placed on the Lead podium at the IFSC World Cup in Innsbruck, with the former securing silver, and the latter winning bronze.

United States’ Colin Duffy and Slovenia’s Martin Bergant completed the top-5 of the men’s qualification round, respectively concluding in fourth and fifth position.
