SPORT CLIMBING TO DEBUT AT PAN AMERICAN GAMES SANTIAGO 2023
Sport Climbing scaled another peak at the LVIII Panam Sports General Assembly today, after a vote secured the sport’s place in the programme of the Pan American Games Santiago 2023.
IFSC President Marco Scolaris joined IFSC Pan American Council President Maria Izquierdo for the announcement, which took place virtually during a two-day assembly.
The XIX Pan American Games are scheduled to take place from October 20 to November 5, 2023 in the Chilean capital of Santiago, which was selected as the host city during the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) General Assembly in November 2017. As the largest multi-sport event in the Americas, over 6800 athletes will participate in the 19th edition of the Games, competing in 38 different sports. The slogan of the 2023 Pan American Games is “Follow your passion”.
IFSC President Marco Scolaris said:
“This is excellent news for Sport Climbing, and a fantastic achievement for our sport within the Pan American region. I would like to thank Panam Sports President Neven Ilic and our friends from the Olympic Movement in the Americas for believing in our sport, which is truly unique. We are looking forward to working with you to bring Sport Climbing to the Pan American Games and to share our sport with the Americas.”
IFSC Pan American Council President Maria Izquierdo said:
“Sport Climbing athletes from the Americas are being offered an additional and wonderful opportunity to showcase their talent. We are immensely grateful to Panam Sports for making the decision to incorporate Sport Climbing into the next edition of the Games. This is the kind of news that will help the spirit of athletes and the whole Pan American Sport Climbing community during these difficult times.”
