#ClimbToTokyo: One Year To Go!

Today, 24 July 2019, officially marks one year until the start of the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games and Sport Climbing’s debut on the Olympic Stage. To celebrate this momentous point in time, the International Olympic Committee held a ceremony at the Tokyo International Forum to officially invite the athletes of the world to the upcoming Olympic games.

At the ceremony, IOC President Thomas Bach said, “All the elements that make up truly outstanding Olympic Games are in place. The athletes of all 206 National Olympic Committees and the IOC Refugee Olympic Team can look forward to an amazing experience.”

The ceremony also included the unveiling of the Tokyo 2020 medal design. Each medal will be created entirely from recycled electronics collected over the past two years, continuing the push toward a more sustainable Olympic games.

As the excitement for the games grows, so does the demand for tickets with more than 3.2 million already sold and over 200,000 people have applied to be volunteers for the event.

Additionally, as the games draw closer, Sport Climbing will have its first Olympic qualifying athletes in just over one month, following the conclusion of the IFSC Climbing World Championships hosted in Hachioji, Japan from August 10 to 21.
