When you started competing in international competitions, did you see yourself being in the top-10?
It was certainly the aim and as I started competing quite late in my career. I’m glad it didn’t take too long to get there!
What motivated you to compete rather than just to climb outside?
I really enjoyed the challenge of it. The mental challenge of competitions just can’t be replicated when just climbing. Knowing that you have to flick the switch and preform there and then really puts the pressure on.
What are some struggles you face as an athlete?
It’s a challenge trying to be a full time athlete when I can only dedicate a small portion of your week to it. I have a full time job as the director of my climbing gym Bayside Rock and there is always something that needs to be done! Getting old doesn’t make it easy being an athlete either.
Who most helped you get to where you are right now?
Without the encouragement of my parents I would never have been able to achieve what I have in my life. So I am so fortunate and thankful to have them.
What advice could you give to Young Athletes?
Don’t take things too seriously. You have to enjoy the process and not just aim for the final goal. I have seen too many people burn out because they haven’t achieved their goals fast enough.
