IFSC Executive Board Teleconference January 2020

On Wednesday 8th January 2020, the IFSC Executive Board came together for their first monthly teleconference of the Olympic year. At the beginning of the biggest year for Sport Climbing to date as we take the final steps towards the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, the meeting offered Board members the opportunity to discuss ongoing developments within the IFSC and relating to our sport as a whole.

The call commenced with a vote to approve the minutes of the last Executive Board meeting which took place at the IFSC Headquarters in Turin, Italy, last month.

The Board then discussed at length the pending Japan Mountaineering and Sport Climbing Association (JMSCA) appeal at CAS (Court of Arbitration for Sport). President Scolaris informed that JMSCA filed a second appeal, despite the good conversation he and IFSC Secretary General Debbie Gawrych had in Turin with JMSCA President Mr Yagihara Kuniaki on December 14th. Unanimously, the IFSC Executive Board approved a statement where they condemned the unreasonable appeal proceedings initiated by JMSCA before CAS in the strongest possible terms, as well as the inappropriate use of media communication on several occasions, causing serious damages to the sport as a whole.

A review of the IFSC Statutes – to be submitted to the Plenary Assembly (PA) for approval – was then conducted, led by the Administration Department. A first version of the 2020 PA provisional agenda, which will be distributed to all National Federations by 13th January, was unanimously approved by the Board, prior to the validation of the Electoral Procedure proposal, the Nomination Committee Proposed Regulations and the Policy for the safeguarding and Protection of Athletes. The Board were then updated on the progress of the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF) Questionnaire, which is to be completed by 15th January 2020.

The teleconference concluded with a vote on the Competitors Fees for the 2021 Fee System and an update on the World Championships 2023 candidatures.

The next IFSC Executive Board teleconference will take place on Tuesday 11th February at 13.00 CET, during which the full agenda for the 2020 Plenary Assembly shall be approved.
