CAC Donates $16,000 to Cancer Research Institute at Vail World Cup

Founder John Ellison is thrilled to announce the successful donation of $16,000 USD (£10,000) by Climbers Against Cancer (CAC) to the Cancer Research Institute, an American cancer research organisation. The check was presented to a representative of the Cancer Research Institute (CRI) on Saturday, June 7 following the IFSC World Cup Bouldering finals.

This marks the fifth such donation that CAC has made since its formation in 2013 with similar donations being made in France, Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom. “The tight-knit climbing community is the key to our ability to raise funds”, says Ellison. “On every corner of the globe we are enthusiastically met by climbers who are proud to wear their CAC colours and help in the fight against cancer.”

Ellison founded Climbers Against Cancer in January 2013 after being diagnosed with terminal cancer in late 2012. He decided to reach out to the climbing community to share his story while raising awareness and funds to aid in cancer research worldwide. His idea was simple: sell brightly coloured CAC emblazoned clothing and badges and donate the proceeds to international cancer research charities on each continent.

“The Cancer Research Institute is incredibly grateful to be the recipient of CAC's generous gift”, says Jill O'Donnell-Tormey, CEO and Director of Scientific Affairs for the CRI. “Immunotherapy is one of the most promising and scientifically advanced approaches available today for treating cancer, and we are proud to continue funding cutting-edge research thanks to the support of friends like CAC.”

CAC Founder and IFSC Honorary Member John Ellison honored by the UIAA

On May 24th, 2014, at an assembly of the their Management Committee in Munich, Germany, the UIAA honored with an award of recognition IFSC Honorary Member John Ellison's refusal to give in to cancer, and his founding a charity that brings together the climbing community to raise funds for cancer research.

Ellison expressed his gratitude on behalf of climbers and all those who have supported CAC worldwide. "It was a pleasure for me to share the story with the UIAA Management Committee" he said.

Climbers Against Cancer (CAC) is the official charity of the International Federation of Sport Climbing. The announcement came on the heels of Ellison being elected as IFSC Honorary Member during the IFSC Plenary Assembly held on March 1, 2014 in Paris, France, in acknowledgement of the important work he was doing with CAC to raise funds for cancer research around the world.

John has explained his reasons for founding his charity with these words:

"Whilst thinking about the possibilities of Climbers Against Cancer as an idea I remembered the saying ‘strength in numbers’ and how the world of climbing as a family has so much power to deliver a message across the globe.”

"If, as a group of friends, we come together and support CAC, it can help others in the future by raising awareness and funds to further research into finally finding a cure for cancer! Being open about my own predicament has helped others feel more comfortable in discussing this disease and whether talking to adults or children I have seen a huge change in attitude.”

The IFSC is so happy for  John Ellison’s well-deserved honor and thanks the UIAA for their support.

Update: IFSC Live Events on YouTube in Germany

To all German IFSC fans,

Due to current regulations of YouTube Live Events in Germany, the IFSC signs a special dispense at the beginning of each season in order to unblock access to our events for German residents. Our contacts at YouTube, however, did not make a note of the date of the Innsbruck competition, and the old blocking system was put back up.
