The Tokyo 2020 event programme was confirmed at an Executive Board meeting of the International Olympic Committee Friday, June 9th, 2017. President Thomas Bach and members of the Executive Board confirmed a programme which focuses on youth, increasing gender equality and emphasising an urban sporting culture. Overall, the event programme will grow by 15 events. Central to the decisions about which events to include was gender equity, as the IOC works towards equal representation from men and women sportspeople in the Olympics. The program in 2020 will feature new women's events and team events in existing sports, including triathlon, swimming and fencing.

Commenting on the decision, IOC President Thomas Bach said “The fascinating new events that we approved today, together with the five new sports that were added to the Tokyo 2020 programme last year, represent a step-change in the Olympic programme. I am delighted that the Olympic Games in Tokyo will be more youthful, more urban and will include more women”, Bach added.

The IFSC welcomes this announcement and especially the youth-focused and urban-based additions to the event programme.

The IFSC Speed World Cup, originally scheduled for July 12-13th, has been cancelled. Due to unforeseen financial circumstances, the FFME has regretfully informed the IFSC that it will not be able to host the Speed World Cup in Chamonix. The organisers advise all National Federations and Competitors that the Lead World Cup will continue as planned. It is possible that the timetable for the lead competition will be adjusted. Should there be any changes these will be made available as soon as possible.
An email update has been sent to all National Federations and the event has been removed from the calendar. Any questions or concerns can be directed to the IFSC office.

With the close of the Asia Tour last month, top Bouldering athletes from all five continents pack their shoes and chalk bags and travel to Vail, United States, for the fifth IFSC event of the 2017 season.
