SEMIFINAL LINEUPS COMPLETE AT EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS MUNICH 2022

Qualification was completed on the second day of the European Championships Munich 2022 as the women attempted to solve the Boulder problems while the men hit the Lead wall.

Over 7000 people were on the Königsplatz in Munich, Germany, taking in the action and cheering the climbers on, and into the semifinals.

It’s so hard not to talk about Slovenia’s Janja Garnbret when you talk about women’s climbing. The Olympic champion was top in Lead qualification yesterday and backed that up by finishing top of Boulder qualification. Garnbret is on her game, topping four of the five problems, and determined to take her first European title!

France’s Oriane Bertone was the only other athlete to top four times to make it safely through the qualification round, although she was not entirely satisfied with her days work: “My last few boulders were not so good. I tried the second one three or four times, but I couldn’t manage to do that. I enjoyed it, so I guess there are not that many bad parts.”

With Garnbret and Bertone first and second in Group A, Group B was led by Belgium’s Chloé Caulier who made the top three times from the five problems.

Germany’s Alma Bestvater and Hannah Meul kept the home crowd happy by making it through qualifying, but Stasa Gejo of Serbia is also feeling the love in the German city: “I love competing here in Munich,” said Gejo. “I’ve lived here for three years after coming for university, so competing here is like being at home. I’ve been coming to the venue by bike.“I’m picking up laundry and thinking ‘I have a competition today’.”

The ‘home’ crowd helped Gejo to make the top 20 and progress to the Boulder semifinal.

With thousands of spectators looking on, Germany’s Alexander Megos and Yannick Flohé gave plenty to cheer about in the men’s Lead qualification.

Megos was joined at the top of the qualification rankings with Adam Ondra of the Czech Republic both scoring a top and 47+. Flohé was just behind in third overall, also topping a route.

Megos said: “The first route involved a bit more climbing, and less bouldering and jumping around, like the second one, but I did ok on both routes. So, I’m happy with that.

“The routes will change for the semifinals and final, so it is rather a case of maybe finding the right style for the routes and their setting, but qualification is about just getting through everything.”

Italy’s Filip Schenk made it through qualification and was satisfied with another good day’s climbing: “I’m really happy with how I performed today. It went really well, better than I thought. I felt in good form in Lead.

“Even better was yesterday in Boulder. I hadn’t trained that much for it and I’m really happy to be in the semifinals.”

Schenk is one of three Italians to make it in to the top 26 to qualify for semifinals – Stefano Ghisolfi and Michael Piccolruaz are the others.
